KARDAMENA OVERVIEW

Kardamena is one of the most popular summer holiday resorts in Greece, it's located on the south coast of the island of Kos which is part of the Dodecanese (12 islands) surrounded by the Aegean sea. Till the beginning of the 80's it used to be a small quiet fishing village with only a few tavernas but now dozens of hotels, restaurants, bars and shops ensure to please every taste and preference. A lot of things have changed through the years but what hasn't changed and makes people visiting Kardamena over and over again, apart of the lovely weather the beautiful beaches and the vibrant nightlife, is the locals genuine hospitality.   More about Kardamena

KARDAMENA HISTORY

Kos Kardamena HistoryKardamena (often misspelled as Kardemena) is built on the site of the ancient settlement of Alasarna the second demos (municipality) in religious importance out of the six, of which Kos was divided - Kos had been a very important trading and exporting centre in the course of long periods in antiquity. At least during the 2nd century BC Alasarna was an important urban centre with a thousand citizens, to whom the slaves and the metics should be added.

The archaeological excavations brought to light some impressive ruins. A Temple of Apollo an extensive Early Christian settlement (from the very few known in Greece), as well as 4 basilicas that belong to the same period. Also many stone objects of everyday use (millstones, tools, vases, vessels etc.), mostly made of volcanic and sedimentary rocks have been recovered so far. Another interesting sight worth visiting is Andimahia's castle which it's built on the remains of an older venetian castle, it's in a very good condition and it will reward you with a spectacular view.

KARDAMENA BEACH

Kardamena Beach

Kardamena's beautiful sandy beach with crystal clear water and a lenght of almost 5 kilometers it's the longest beach on Kos island and it's easy to please every taste and preference. Combined with the lovely Kos weather it's ideal from lazy sunbathing and fishing, to snorkeling, scuba diving and watersports.

Highly recommended - Helona (turtle) beach the heart of Kardamena's "Blue Flag" awarded beach Gourniatis about two kilometers away from the west side of town. Those who don't like the sand are not going to be short in choices either, there are many swimming pools with snack bars in the resort open to the public.

KARDAMENA NIGHTLIFE

Kardamena NightlifeOne of the things Kardamena is very well know for it's the nightlife. Either you're young and single looking for party every night, or with your family seeking for more relaxed and chilled atmosphere Kardamena is the perfect choice.

Dozens of bars pubs cafes and nightclubs to choose from, playing music from the 60's till the latest hits, offering exotic cocktails, lethal shooters and cold draught beers. Most nightclubs don't charge for entrance and the ones they do they don't charge for the first drink. Closing time during the week is 4 am and 6 am at the weekends, there are also some 24 hours bars if you want to carry on - watching the sunrise is something everyone should do at least once.

FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION

Kardamena AccommodationIn Kardamena the last few years the quality standards are improving constantly and have reached at the moment a very satisfying level. There are many restaurants offering delicious meals with excellent service from very cheap to extremely reasonable prices.

Accommodation in Kardamena is following the same path and the visitor has multiple choices. The main town offers a large amount of pretty basic but always clean self catering apartments and quite a few 2* - 3* hotels. A couple of kilometers outside the resort (to the east and the west) a not always walkable distance specially at the end of the night, there's about a dozen of luxury all inclusive 4* - 5* hotels.

ACTIVITIES - ENTERTAINMENT

Kardamena ActivitiesIn Kardamena one thing is for sure you won't get bored, there's a wide variety of available activities day or night to keep your self entertained. If you wish to explore the underwater world there's a scuba diving center just outside Kardamena. There's a wide range of watersports available at the main beach - from extreme ringos and water ski to jet bikes and parascending. For the lovers of speed, or if you just want to try your driving skills under different circumstances, there's a go cart track a couple of kilometers outside the resort. Daily excursions and boat trips to the surrounding islands or other places on Kos are also available and you can even hire a boat for a day. If you miss football and don't mind sweating there's a 5 a side football pitch which stays open till late at night. If you wish to explore the island there are many car rental places  where you can hire all kind of different vehicles - obviously you need a valid driving license. There're building a bowling alley in the center of Kardamena but we don't know yet the exact date it's going to be ready - in the meanwhile the only option is the one in Kos town. Horse riding is also available in the jockey club in Amaniou close to Pyli about 20 minutes away and a brand new gigantic waterpark with many kinds of slides and swimming pools is located between Marmari and Mastihari about 10-15 minutes away.
